Berkeley County, Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES)® / Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) is a member run organization of Berkeley County, SC, based Amateur Radio operators (Hams) who are trained and dedicated to providing radio communications for civil-preparedness and relief agencies during periods of local, regional, or national civil emergencies. These emergencies may include natural disasters (such as severe weather, fires, floods or earthquakes) or acts of terrorism.
To meet the requirements of the Berkeley County Emergency Operations Plan, a member run organization was formed to chart it’s own course in training, operations and readiness. This group of volunteers is organized under the American Radio Relay League (ARRL) ARES® program.

Additionally, Berkeley County ARES members will be registered for operation in the Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) program. An High Frequency (HF) operating position will allow for communications with State and Federal agencies including SC Emergency Management Department (SCEMD), Shared Resources (SHARES), DOD/Homeland Defense, FEMA and Navy/MarineCorps Military Affiliate Radio Stations(MARS).
