review and thanks from an audience member on opening night

7/12/2009

My daughter and I had the pleasure of viewing your performance of
Hamlet in Norwood, Massachusetts last night! Wow, what a terrific and
professional production!

The sets were great for an outdoor setting, and the costumes were very
appropriate. The sound was kind of wonky, but the actors projected
well.

The acting was uniformly good. I am kind of a Hamlet connoisseur,
having studied and written about the play in college. I never miss a
chance to see Hamlet live. It's such a challenge that few even attempt
it, never mind do the excellent job you did. Very few productions even
understand all the jokes and references in the play, let alone act
them appropriately. Your cast really "got" the play in all its
complexity and humor, and expressed it well to the audience. While I
would describe myself as a Shakespeare purist, I appreciate
non-traditional productions when they work. And this female version of
Hamlet did work.

Wendy Lippe, the actress playing Hamlet, deserves special recognition.
The role of Hamlet is a roller-coaster of personas, intellect,
emotion, and sharp wit. Wendy Lippe was terrific in expressing all of
these facets of Hamlet's character.

I also liked Anthony Medeiros as Polonius. He projected well and
expressed the pompous cluelessness of the character.

Matthew Curtis, in several roles, showed a lot of personality and
brought a great humanness to the sometimes lofty play.

The uncredited Laertes did yeoman's work filling in for an absent cast member.

Please don't feel that I am slighting the rest of the cast. Everyone
had special moments throughout the play that touched me. Their work
was exceptionally good.

My teenage daughter had never seen or read Hamlet before. I was
surprised that she could sit through the entire production. You can
take this as a tribute to the fascination that the entire cast brought
to your efforts.

I'm glad that the weather, and the light, held for the whole play.
Performing outdoors in New England takes courage!

Thank you so much for your performance of Hamlet. The audience may
have been small, but our appreciation of your production was great.
Congratulations on an excellent performance!
