FreeBSD is a freely available, commercial-quality operating system distribution which stemmed out of fifteen years of work at Berkley University's Computer Science Research Group. It is one of three such operating systems that owe their existence to the work at Berkley; OpenBSD and NetBSD are the other two. All three operating systems share the heritage of the BSD lineage, including stability, scalability, and versatility. The contributions of giants in the field of Computer Science is evidenced in the quality of all three branches, giants such as Bill Joy, Marshall Kirk McKusickrKeith Bostic, and Michael J. Karels.
