Chapter 13
Jason knocked on the door to Penthouse 4 and waited. Sonny didn't answer it, so Jason let himself in with the key Sonny had previously given him. He didn't see Sonny at first, just the wreckage, and immediately thought that Sorel's men had gotten to him. "Sonny!" he yelled, racing towards the stairs. He climbed them two at a time and looked for Sonny. Not finding him upstairs, he hurried back down. It was then he noticed Sonny lying on floor; he had slipped off the sofa after passing out. Jason went to his side, "Sonny!" He felt for a pulse and was relieved to find one. Sonny's breathing was fine as well. Jason picked him up under the arms and moved him to the couch. He tried to revive him, but had no luck. Keeping a close eye on Sonny, Jason reached for his cell phone to call Benny. "It's Jason. Send Johnny over to Sonny's penthouse, now. Tell him to guard the door. And, put a couple of guys on the restaurant." He hung up, ignoring Benny's anxious questioning of what had happened. Jason sat in silence, watching Sonny and waiting for him to wake up.
Meanwhile, Robin arrived at Kelly's and went to Brenda's room. "Thanks for coming," Brenda told her. "Of course," Robin replied, closing the door behind her. "Tell me what happened Brenda." Brenda took a deep breath and told her the whole story. "You must have been terrified," Robin said, holding her hands. Brenda nodded, "I was, and I kept waiting for Sonny to do something, but he just stood there." "I'm sure he was waiting for the right moment; he didn't want you to get hurt." "I guess," Brenda said sadly. "But then afterwards, when I was freaking out, he just stopped and backed away from me. He didn't even try to tell me it was all right, that he was sorry..." "Would it have made a difference?" Robin asked. "Yes." "So what, you wanted him on his knees begging your forgiveness?" "I didn't say that!" "Well that's what it sounds like," Robin scolded. "You're not mad that it happened, you're mad at how he reacted afterwards. That's not fair." "Well what difference does it make Robin? He told me to go, and I left. And I'm not going back there." "And what about Sonny? You're just going to walk away from him, for good?" "I think I have to," Brenda said with tears in her eyes; "but it's the last thing I want to do. Robin, I love him."
Jason reluctantly left Sonny's side to answer the door. Johnny O'Brien, one of Sonny's foot soldiers, had arrived as requested. Jason quickly shut the door behind him, so Johnny wouldn't see what had happened inside. Jason still didn't know if Sonny was attacked, or if he had caused all the damage himself. He wondered if Sonny had fallen and hit his head, knocking himself unconscious. "I want you watching this door all night Johnny," he said; "don't take your eyes off it. If you need a break, knock and let me know." Johnny nodded his head, "yes Mr. Morgan. Can I ask what's going down?" Jason simply replied, "no," and went back inside. He walked back over to the sofa and found Sonny waking up. "Sonny, can you hear me?" Sonny sat up, with Jason's help, and put his head in his hands. "Sonny?" "Yeah Jason, I hear you. What the hell happened?" "I don't know, I was hoping you could tell me. Was it Sorel's men?" Sonny looked at him, his mind suddenly clear. "No, it wasn't. What about Sorel, what happened?" "I took care of him," Jason replied with a smile, "and I made it extra special for what he did to Brenda." "Thanks man," Sonny whispered. He looked around, "I gotta clean this mess up." Jason held Sonny down with his hands on Sonny's shoulders, "you sit there. I'll take care of it." He started picking things up, "so, you don't know how this all happened?" "Yeah, I...I went a little crazy." Jason let out a breath of relief, "oh, OK." Sonny almost laughed as Jason kept cleaning and didn't ask any more questions. "That's it? 'Oh OK'? You're not going to ask me why I did it?" Jason looked at him, "nope. If you want to tell me you will. Otherwise, I guess it's none of my business." Sonny smiled, "I appreciate that man, especially now. So, how's Brenda, do you know?" "Robin's with her now; she said Brenda sounded upset on the phone." Sonny nodded his head and stood up, "yeah, I'd imagine she is." "She'll get over it right?" Jason asked with concern. "I don't think so Jason," Sonny quietly replied, "I think it's over, and it's probably for the best." "How can you say that?" Jason asked, staring at him, "you really like her, don't you?" "Yeah, and that's why it has to be over." "I don't get it." "I know, but I do, and that's all I want to say about it." Jason knew when to change the subject, and he changed it to himself. "Sonny, I'm sorry...I know I messed up." Sonny shook his head, "no you didn't Jason, it's my fault." "How can you say that?" Jason asked, raising his voice, "I let him grab her; I failed you!" "Jason!" Sonny yelled, "you didn't fail me man! Just forget it!" He walked off to the kitchen to get a drink of water. Jason watched him go, not feeling any better about his role in what happened, and worried about Sonny walking away from Brenda when it was obvious that he cared for her. "Maybe Robin can explain it to me," Jason thought, returning to the big task of cleaning up.
