Chapter 20

"Hello?" Jason answered Sonny's phone so it wouldn't wake him. He heard someone breathing at the other end. "Hello? Is someone there?" Brenda finally spoke, "Jason?" "Brenda? Hey, what's up?" "What's up? Why are you answering Sonny's phone in the middle of the night? What happened to him?!" "Brenda, Brenda, calm down! Sonny's fine. He's just asleep." Brenda almost fainted with relief. "Thank you God," she whispered. "What?" "Nothing. So he's OK?" "He's fine. Do you want me to wake him up?" Then, Brenda's fear turned to anger, "no. Don't bother. Let the bastard sleep!" She hung up the phone, leaving Jason wondering what kind of a fruit cake Sonny had gotten himself involved with. Brenda grabbed her keys and left the restaurant, locking up behind her. She was furious that Sonny had just left her there and gone to sleep. "What the hell is the matter with him?"

The next morning, Sonny wasn't surprised to find Jason sitting at the dining room table, drinking coffee. "You're starting to become a permanent fixture here," he joked; "maybe you should just move in." Jason smiled, then Sonny added, "on second thought, someone else might be doing that soon." That reminded Jason that Brenda had called. "Oh yeah, Sonny, Brenda called last night. She was acting very strangely." Sonny looked at him, "what do you mean 'strangely'?" "Well, first she thought you'd been hurt, then when I told her you were asleep, she got all mad and hung up." Sonny covered his eyes with his hand, "oh shit!" "What?" "I was supposed to pick her up last night. With Mike and all, I totally forgot." "Well just explain it to her, she'll understand," Jason offered. Sonny shook his head, "no way!" "Why not?" "Because I said so Jason! Leave it alone! I don't want you telling anyone about last night, you hear me?" "Yes sir, I hear you." "Good." Sonny walked into the kitchen to get some coffee, and to try to figure out a way to appease Brenda without telling her about his father. That was one Pandora's box he definitely did not want to open.

At Kelly's, Brenda was eating breakfast with Robin, whom she called at the crack of dawn. "There must be a reason he didn't come for you," Robin said; "Sonny's not inconsiderate like that." "Yeah, well maybe not with you. But Jason told me he was asleep so...I guess all that sex earlier wore the poor guy out." "Brenda! You still think he's only with you for the sex?" Brenda tried to calm down, "not really. He told me he loves me." Robin almost jumped for joy, "he did? Oh my God I'm so happy!" Brenda smiled, "yeah well, don't be. I don't know if this is going to work out." "But you love him too right? That's what you told me?" "Yes I love him, but I'm really starting to think that what you said is true...that Sonny is too much to handle." "Doesn't look like an issue to me," Robin replied, noticing the man in question had just entered Kelly's. "Good morning Sonny!" she cheerfully greeted him. "Morning sweetheart," Sonny said back; "Brenda." "Sonny," Brenda curtly acknowledged him. "Robin, I don't meant to be rude..." Sonny began. "No problem," Robin cut him off and got up. "I'll leave you two alone." She hurried off before Brenda could stop her, and Sonny took her seat. "I know I messed up last night," he said. Brenda didn't respond. It wasn't fair that he was so damn handsome; she could hardly think straight when he was around. "Something happened, and it kind of threw me off. I just forgot to come get you. I'm sorry baby. Do you forgive me?" Brenda studied his face; he seemed sincere. "That depends Sonny; what happened. What was so much more important than me?" Sonny shook his head, "it's not like that." "Well, what's it like? I think I deserve an explanation." Sonny's voice dropped to a whisper, "I can't tell you." "You mean you won't." "No, I can't. There are some things I can't discuss with you." "Oh, so this is business, right?" "Sort of." "Oh great. So you can't talk to me, you can't remember to pick me up, but I'm sure you could remember how to fuck me if I invited you up to my room right now. Couldn't you Sonny?" "Keep your voice down!" Sonny told her through clenched teeth. "Just forget it!" Brenda exclaimed, got up, and ran up the stairs to her room. Sonny sank back in his chair; the world was closing in on him, and he was losing control. And that was not good, for anyone.
