Well Worth the Wait
a Sonny & Brenda story
Chapter 11
An older man got up from the couch upon hearing them come in. "Harry." "Good evening Sonny," Harry Silver replied. "Sorry to disturb you, but there's something we need to discuss." Sonny nodded, and then introduced Brenda, informing Harry that she was moving in. Harry didn't visibly react to the news; instead he shook Brenda's hand and told her, "nice to meet you Brenda." Sonny turned to her, "sweetie, do me a favor and go upstairs for a minute. I need to speak with Harry." "OK," Brenda replied, feeling disoriented and confused by the new place and the new people. Sonny kissed her on the cheek and then whispered in her ear, "our bedroom's at the top of the stairs." Brenda headed up, but stopped at the top and hid so she could hear their conversation. "What do you need Harry?" "Sonny, with all due respect, do you think this is a good idea? Having that girl move in here with you?" Sonny stared at him without replying for a few moments. Harry knew him well enough to know he was angry. When he finally spoke, Sonny said, "you say you mean no disrespect, but what you said is disrespectful and I won't tolerate it Harry." Harry looked down at the ground. "I'm I'm sorry Sonny." "Brenda's nobody's business but mine," Sonny added sharply, "you got that?" Harry looked him in the eyes, "got it." "Now, what did you need to discuss with me?" "It's Burns " "He's one of our bookies, right?" "Yeah. I think he's double-dipping." Sonny ran his hands over his face. More than anything he hated when people put him in situations where he had to be violent. He tried to avoid violence when he could, although working for Frank made that difficult. It was usually Frank's first response to any situation. But Sonny was the boss of Port Charles, not Frank, and he ran things his way. But people stealing from him was unacceptable, and they needed to know that. "Sit him down and talk to him Harry. Let him know you're on to him, and give him a chance to return what he took. Tell him one chance is all he'll get." "You got it," Harry replied. He started to leave, and then turned back and added, "listen Sonny, about Brenda I hope you'll be very happy with her." Sonny didn't reply and watched him leave. Brenda quickly got up and hurried into the master bedroom. There, she sat down on the bed breathing hard. She was no longer confused; she knew exactly what Sonny was into. He was a gangster and she just moved in with him.
Sonny joined her in the bedroom a few minutes later. Brenda pretended to be busy fixing her hair in front of the mirror. "You look gorgeous baby," Sonny told her in a strained voice. He wanted her something fierce. "Come 'ere," he added. Brenda turned and walked to him. Sonny took her face in his hands and kissed her long and hard. When he finished, Brenda backed away from him. "What's wrong?" Sonny asked with a smile. "Sonny, I " His eyes darkened, "what, you don't want to make love?" "No, it's not that." "Oh," Sonny relaxed, "so what is it?" "Nothing, forget it," Brenda replied. "No tell me," Sonny insisted. Before she could say anything further, there was a knock on the bedroom door. Sonny opened it, and Joseph carried the suitcases and shopping bags in. "Thanks," Sonny told him. "Yes sir. Do you or the lady need anything else?" "No that's fine." "I'll be leaving then; Pete's here to relieve me." "Goodnight." "Goodnight boss." Joseph left, closing the door behind him and Brenda let it all out. "OK Sonny why does he call you boss? Who are you?" Sonny rolled his eyes at the ceiling; "here we go!" "Here we go what?" Brenda cried. Sonny looked at her, "here we go with you getting all in my business, and telling me how bad I am. I knew it would happen, but I thought you'd actually unpack first!"
Brenda felt badly and told him, "Sonny, I told you I don't want to judge you. But I'm living with you now. I think I have the right to know what I'm in the middle of." Sonny took a deep breath and let it out. He thought about how much he could tell her without really telling her anything. "I'm in charge of a business Brenda; not unlike your father's." "My father doesn't have big men guarding his door, or people talking to him about double-dipping!" As soon as the words left her mouth she knew she'd blown it. "What did you say?" Sonny asked. "Sonny " "You were eavesdropping? Two minutes in the door and you listened in when I asked you for privacy?" Sonny's voice grew louder with each word. "OK I did it! I'm sorry! But I had to know!" "Damn it Brenda!" Sonny bellowed. He tried to calm down. "Listen to me; you have to understand something here. If I tell you to give me privacy, I mean it. If you can't do that, if you have to know everything that goes on in my life, then we'd better just end this right now!" Brenda felt despondent. The last thing she wanted was to lose him. "I I don't want to end it Sonny." "OK. So I'm going to take that to mean you'll respect my privacy, and that you won't ask questions about things that don't concern you. Can you do that?" Brenda nodded her head; "yes." Sonny nodded his, and then walked over to his bar. He poured himself a scotch, and then downed it in practically one gulp. After putting the glass down, he turned back to Brenda and said, "now come 'ere."
As they lay naked together, Brenda knew she had to ask one final
question. And she prayed he would answer it directly. She moved on top of
him, and he entered her. Brenda sat up and looked him in the eyes. "I
want to ask you one more thing Sonny. And I swear, if you tell me the truth
I won't ask you anything else." Sonny inwardly groaned, but replied,
"fine." "Are you in the mob?" Sonny couldn't help but
smile; she had guts and he liked that. "I have been since I was sixteen
years old Brenda. Does that answer your question?" Brenda smiled back,
"yes thank you. Now, where were we?" Sonny was relieved, to say
the least, and surprised at her reaction. Brenda started moving up and down,
and her head falling back in sheer pleasure. Sonny rested his hands on her
small hips and admired her beauty. He swore to himself that he was going to
make this work, no matter what it took.
