Well Worth the Wait

a Sonny & Brenda story

Chapter 12

Hours later, the couple finally lay quietly together. Their love making had turned into a marathon session…Sonny couldn't seem to get enough of her. He doubted he ever would. Brenda was on cloud nine. Although she was still nervous about being in love and living with a gangster, she was too happy to dwell on that. Sonny made her feel so good, both in her heart and her body; she never wanted the feeling to end. But being quiet for long wasn't in Brenda's nature, and she still had a lot of questions for Sonny about his life. "Will you tell me about that guy we saw in New York?" "What…who?" "That guy in the restaurant; Chris, I think you said." "I thought you promised not to ask any more questions?" Sonny teased. "Not about your business. But this is about you. He said you were like brothers…do you have any brothers or sisters?" "No, I was an only child. I told you that my mother asked me to leave when I was sixteen." "Right. Why?" "By that time I was fighting back against my stepfather, and she thought we'd kill each other." "That's horrible Sonny; you were just a kid! How could he do that to you?" "Pretty easily. He did it for eight years." Brenda shuddered and nestled in closer to Sonny. "Please go on." "So I left Brooklyn, and lived on the streets of Manhattan for a while. Then I hooked up with these kids who stole cars for one of the rackets there. I was good at it," he added with a hint of pride in his voice. Brenda giggled, "I'm sure you were. You're damn good at something else!" Sonny laughed and kissed her. He then continued the tale. "One day I found this red T-bird; man that thing was hot!" "It was once you took it," Brenda quipped. "No comments from the peanut gallery please," Sonny joked. "But as I drove off with it, I started to feel really bad. It was the nicest car I'd ever seen, and I didn't want it to get chopped up." "So what did you do?" "I took it back. And they nabbed me." "The cops?" Sonny shook his head, "nope; Joe Scully's men." "Scully? That's Chris' last name." "Right. His father. I thought I was dead. Scully was a big cheese around there. In fact, it was one of his operations I was working for…but I didn't know it. He was so far up the food chain I had no idea." "What did he do to you?" Brenda asked apprehensively. "He was amazing. He gave me a stern lecture, and then told me I was going to wash his car everyday for the next year. But it turned out I only did it for half of that. Then, he really took me under his wing." "And then you were in," Brenda stated. "Yup, in for life," Sonny replied. Brenda sighed. "Thank you for telling me all that. I feel so much closer to you now." Sonny kissed the top of her head, "you're welcome. Now, are we going to sleep, or…" Brenda quickly rolled away from him and sank down into her pillow. "I'm going to sleep!" Sonny laughed heartily and then said, "goodnight sweetheart." Brenda smiled, "goodnight Sonny."

Sonny watched Brenda sleep; he was unable too. He was nervous about how much of himself he had revealed to her, and had a hard time believing she was really alright with all of it. He always protected himself, ever since Mike left him, and always kept that wall up around him. But Brenda was making him take it down brick by brick, and Sonny felt exposed; maybe too exposed.
