Well Worth the Wait
a Sonny & Brenda story
Chapter 19
Brenda went to school the next day happier than she'd ever been in her life. Sonny loved her; he'd finally said it. Not that she didn't know he did, but hearing the words made it that much more real. However, they didn't spend much time discussing it the night before, because they got distracted with an equally serious discussion. Sonny realized they hadn't used a condom when they made love on the sofa, and he was concerned. "But you said you've been tested right?" Brenda asked. "Yeah." "So what's the problem? You know, if you knocked me up I wouldn't think that was a bad thing." Sonny looked at and smiled, "neither would I sweetheart. I would love for you to have my baby. But I'm more concerned right now about HIV." "Sonny, seriously, what is this preoccupation you have with this?" Sonny took in a deep breath and then let it out. "His name was Stone; and he was my friend, my brother. I took him in off the streets when he was fifteen, and one of the first things we did was get him tested. It came back negative, and we never gave it another thought. But three years later, he was diagnosed with AIDS." Brenda gasped and covered her mouth with her hand. "Yeah, exactly. It was horrible. It was as bad as getting beaten by Deke worse actually, because it was happening to someone I cared about. He lasted less than a year." "Sonny that's awful, I'm so sorry." "Thanks. So, you'll understand if I'm paranoid about HIV?" "I understand, but, haven't you practiced safe sex since then?" "Of course, but I'm sure I didn't always before he got sick. I might have forgotten, like last night." Brenda hugged him, "I'm sure it's OK. Why don't you get tested again and then we'll know for sure?" Sonny agreed; but knew that would have to wait until the volatile business situation was sorted out. For that could prove just as deadly as an incurable virus.
"What's the latest Harry?" Sonny inquired as they met in a local safehouse. "Scully and Frank are meeting tomorrow night, I haven't found out where yet. I'm sure Joe's going to try to take Frank out, and visa versa." "It'll be a blood bath," Sonny commented. "No doubt," Harry replied. "Well, we need to know where that meeting is, and what routes they're taking to get to it. And we need to be in position to take care of whoever survives it. Plus, we need people on both Frank and Joe's lieutenants, who probably won't be at the meeting. No one can walk away from this, or we're dead." "Sonny, are you sure about this? It's not too late to join up with Joe." Sonny shook his head, "yeah it is. I know him really well. When I hesitated at his plan I became another person he'd have to take out. Which reminds me; put extra men on the penthouse. Brenda and I will hold up there." "Sonny, you're the boss but I think it would be better if you and Brenda left town. Go somewhere not in Frank or Joe's territories. And if you don't hear from me saying all's clear don't come back."
Sonny surprised Brenda that evening with the news they were
talking a trip for the weekend. "Oh yeah, where?" "You'll find
out when we get there," Sonny teased. In reality, he didn't want Brenda
to know, so she wouldn't accidentally tell anyone. "Well, what should
I pack?" Sonny moved his eyebrows up and down; "very little!"
"Sonny, I'm serious! At least tell me if it's going to be warm?"
"It's going to be hot baby
smoking hot!"
