Consultant - Disaster Recovery/Business Continuity Planning
Three year assignment as a consultant to the Corporate Contingency Planner for HCSC, Health Care Services Corporation (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois). Converted 23 existing plans from COMPAS to WORD. Initiated an INTRANET system for Business Continuity Planning. Created additional plans for 80 business units prior to the millennium. Assisted in the initial conversion of the 103 plans to a new Strohl LDRPS system.

Disaster Recovery Coordinator
Designed contingency documentation system used by about 20 internal support teams and 25 client business units using IBM's BookMaster/BookManager system. Changes made to user contingency documentation are immediately available to over 1,000,000 terminals in the IBM/Sears/Allstate/Dean Witter/Coldwell Banker/Discover Card backbone and dial-up networks.
Coordinate the system backups for three data centers with 19 MVS images in 11 DASD complexes. System Backups are transmitted daily to the other sites; one is restored daily to provide one hour recovery. Provided recovery services for 4 additional customer data centers with 14 MVS images within these sites.
Perform about 20 recovery tests per year, all with excellent customer satisfaction ratings. One of our businesses, Dean Witter, is committed to have an operating system and on-line files available to the last backup within one hour of declaration - this business unit tests 4-6 times per year. The other business units are committed to having an operating system and a large portion of their files recovered within 24 hours.
Co-founder of the Business Resumption Planners Association, a Disaster Recovery User Group in the midwest. Invited guest speaker at one monthly meeting: topic - Contingency Testing at STS.

Disaster Recovery/Risk Assessment
Created the Recovery Action Plan for recovery from any type of disaster to their data center. Organized the plan, making extensive use of the Comdisco PC software, COMPAS.

Security Analyst & Data Security Officer (1984-1988)
Served as installation Data Security Officer for 1-1/2 years. Duties entailed 24 hours/day on-call from a dial-up terminal in my home for immediate response to computer security problems.
Organized and supervised a team of eight technicians in the assessment of security exposures to the installation for all areas of security such as employee risks, network exposures, etc. Reported to upper management an assessment of risks and recommended measures to reduce those exposures.
Established a task force of five security analysts to determine the objectives for the data security team. Established procedures for each job function identifying responsibility levels and duties which became the basis for the data security effort for the organization.
Documented the data center implementation of ACF2 with emphasis on specific techniques and user exits that complemented the basic system. Consulted with development analysts on the security aspects of new systems and application software to insure implementation with proper controls.
Initiated dial-up security support for disaster recovery hot-site to reduce the expense of on-site personnel.
Disaster Recovery Technician (1983-1984)
Developed plans and procedures for the recovery of critical production applications. Worked with programmers and analysts to evaluate and test the recoverability of applications in a hot-site disaster recovery situation.
Change Control Coordinator (1982-1983)
Implemented a process for controlling changes to on-line applications, critical batch, software and hardware. Developed procedures, controls and reporting for these changes and provided recovery with a minimum disruption in case of failures. Added networking changes later.
Technical Analyst (1976-1982)
Established installation standards relating to production applications and programming to include naming conventions, JCL standards, and requirements for new systems and changes to existing ones.
Consulted with programming staff for the installation of all on-line applications and most batch applications to insure a smooth start-up or conversion, application integrity and easy of recovery in case of problems.
Responsible for the creation, maintenance, update, and back-up of all application production system libraries. Controlled passwords for all production libraries. Relocated all production files and libraries to a new data center with no loss of data or disruption of production schedules other than what was planned.
Senior Technical Specialist (1967-1976)
Supervised and trained a staff of four clerical personnel and nine technical specialists who designed, wrote and tested JCL for all production jobs prior to their acceptance in the data center. Updated and maintained all production program and JCL libraries. Maintained all DASD space. Established installation standards relating to production applications.

Honorably discharged as an Infantry Captain after 5 years service. Positions held included Plans Officer for the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Fifth Army Headquarters, in Chicago, Illinois for 1 1/2 years and Platoon Leader and Executive Officer positions in Germany for 3 years. Airborne qualified.
