Revised 7/25/2006

WHAT IS AN OSTOMY?

An Ostomy is a type of surgery required when a person has lost the normal function of the bowel or bladder due to a birth defect, disease, injury, cancer or other disorders. Such operations include permanent or temporary Colostomies, Ileostomies, and Urinary Diversions.

An Ostomy allows normal body wastes to be expelled through a surgical opening in the abdominal wall and into a special appliance over the stoma, or artificial opening.

MISSION STATEMENT

The primary purpose of our-group is the physical, emotional and social rehabilitation of the Ostomy patient through mutual aid, information and understanding.

VISITING

Visiting is an important function of our group, and is done both before and after the operation. In-hospital visits made at the request of the patient's physician.

Talking with a person who has had Ostomy surgery and who demonstrates an ability to live a normal, happy life, frequently helps the patient to accept the surgery and is very important in the rehabilitation process.

The Ostomy Visitor offers visual evidence and reassurance that life with an Ostomy need not be a handicap.

We are a component of the United Ostomy Association of America, Inc., which is made up of groups like ours in many cities throughout the United States and in some foreign countries.

We are a self-governing group land have a medical advisory board, elected officers and directors. The chapter is supported by dues and donations. We are incorporated in the State of Illinois as a not-for-profit, tax exempt organization.
