I have followed the exploits of the Pittsburgh Steelers from about 10 years of age, in 1957, to the present. The Steelers were a very mediocre team until 1969. That is when Chuck Noll took over as head coach and started to build the team of the seventies. Through some of the best drafts ever, he assembled an offense that featured Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Rocky Bleier, Lynn Swann and John Stallworth along with defensive stars like Joe Greene, L.C. Greenwood, Jack Ham, and Jack Lambert among others. While building a team that would win 4 Super Bowls in 6 years, one play appeared to change the course of football history in Pittsburgh. It happened on December 23, 1972 and was the winning play against the Oakland Raiders in a first round AFC playoff game. It is known as the Immaculate Reception.

Listen to the classic Steeler fight song, from the 70's, titled the Steeler Polka or read the lyrics. Another song describes the Steeler's Super Bowl years as doing it my way. (2.5 meg RealPlayer file) Much more on Steeler fight songs .

Check out the 1 minute real video player version of the classic Mean Joe Greene's Coke commercial. The commercial was shown during the Steeler Super Bowl years.

Chuck Noll remained head coach thru 1991. They came close several times, but did not return to the Super Bowl.

Bill Cowher became head coach in 1992. In 1995 the Steelers returned to the Super Bowl in SB XXX. One big factor that season was the emergance of Kordell "Slash" Stewart. They got to Super Bowl XXX by defeating the Indianapolis Colts, 20-16, in the 1995 AFC Championship game on January 14 1996.

- The Steelers lost Super Bowl XXX to the Cowboys 27-17 on January 28, 1996.

Going into 1998, Bill guided the Steelers into the playoffs his first 6 years as head coach. Paul Brown is the only other head coach that has done this in the NFL. Too bad that trend did not continue.
