Preparation

Self Defense
Unfortunately, self defense is a necessary subject when discussing
preparedness. Any scenario which would make food or basic services hard
to obtain would also likely mean an increase in lawlessness. I believe
our society would likely react badly to a serious WMD attack or other
extended nationwide crises. I know some may disagree, and that is your
right. However, I think the headlines support my view. People riot now
when their team loses a football game, or when a cop shoots a repeat
criminal in the process of committing a crime, or for something to do
on a boring night. We have also seen a dramatic increase in the
depravity of crimes committed. I would hate to see how the lawless and
near lawless elements of our society would act if they were hungry and
the restraining influence of law and order were not in place.
Here is a scenario for you to consider on this subject:
A Survival Scenario
OK, you've gone to all this trouble to stock up on survival goods to
keep you and yours safe and sound through whatever disaster or
emergency strikes. All this preparation stands you in good stead when
the balloon goes up. You have food, water and shelter while most of the
sheep are lost without the shepherd.
Then your neighbor is killed by a bunch of marauders who steal
everything he has, rape his wife and children and torch his house. The
last you see of them, as you peer out the basement window, they are
laughing as they drag his 14-year old daughter away, naked, into the
night.
You have a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach. You know they'll
be back, and your house will be their target. No one has seen a police
man for over a week and the national guard is protecting gas stations
in the city, nowhere near your house.
This is not the time to realize you should have included a gun or two
in your survival supplies. Remember, even if you could get to the gun
store and they were open, there's a five day waiting period (Thank you,
Mrs. Brady).

Should you decide to arm yourself, I suggest either a shotgun, or a
semi-automatic military-style assault rifle. Handguns are fine, but 99%
of the population will find it far easier to hit something with a rifle
or shotgun than a pistol. Also, the cartridges are more powerful, and
most assault rifles can use 20 or 30 round magazines.
I chose the AR-15, which is the civilian version of the current
military issue M-16. Here is a great page with everything you will ever
want to know about the AR-15.

You can spend $700 - $2,000 on one, depending on whether you purchase
pre or post ban version, and load it up with accessories. Hopefully we
will see the meaningless and politically correct assault weapons ban
expire this September, and high priced pre-ban versions will be a thing
of the past.
An excellent weapon is the FAL, in a heavier caliber (7.62mm NATO) than
the AR-15. I am considering purchasing one. You can pick up a good FAL
for $700 or more:

Another excellent, but expensive rifle in 7.62mm NATO is the M1A, the
modernized version of the famous M1 Garand that helped win WWII.

Whatever you purchase should have tritium night sights and a tactical
light mounted, as most encounters would be likley to occur after dark.
If you are on a tight budget, the Russian SKS Carbine may be the best
value. It is very reliable, reasonably accurate, and dirt cheap. I can
purchase Yugoslavian variants now for $100 including tax locally. I
have several simply for future trade or to loan to others. A drawback
is that it only has a 10 round fixed magazine.

Supplier of very inexpensive military surplus firearms such as the SKS.
You can not order directly from them unless you have a gun dealers
license (FFL), but many dealers will order for you for a small
additional charge (about $20)

excellent ammo prices. Not all ammo is considered equal, check the
message boards I posted for your particular weapon and do a search for
ammo, you will quickly learn what to buy and what to stay away from.
Store your ammo in military ammo cans (.50 caliber) with a desiccant
pack (absorbs moisture) in a cool place, and it should last 20 years or
more. Many are still using WWII ammo that is 60 years old.

excellent training videos. No sense having a weapon unless you are
competent with it.

Excellent periodical with many bargains

customer service, but excellent pricing and selection of accessories.
