Highbush Blueberry
Description: The Highbush Blueberry is a tall shrub.  It can grow from 1.5 to 4.5 meters tall.  The flowers are 6 to 13 mm long and white.  The fruit is a blueberry with whitish bloom and the growing period is June to August. Leaves are dark green and shiny on top and slightly hairy on the bottom.  They are alternate, simple, 3-8 cm long and oval.  The bark is roughened, grayish and mottled. 
Discussion: The leaves are used for food for deer and rabbits. The blueberries are used edible. This plant is important source of food for the wildlife in Volo Bog
Distribution: Characteristic of low lying, acidic wetlands.  Common in the eastern U.S.
