The Part that Still Remains

We look at names, photos dear
Of lives so young and precious
Can't believe they've gone away
Can't believe there's no tomorrow

Some were friends since early years
Others closer as time passed by
But still there's thoughts and memories
And the part that still remains

Souls are created, live and breathe
They are not just who we see
But all that is substance of a life
It has to be so much more

Than just a fragile breath
Most of us have known heartache
Tragedy that comes all too soon
Life never seems to have been enough
We want to linger on, want those closest
To be ever near

But don't let it be
That a life is forgotten
Each life had its purpose
Special meaning, unique gift
Sometimes it takes time
To know and understand

The part that still remains
The essence of who someone is
Will never change, never die
Even though earthly days come to an end
It's not the end that will forever be

Tears are shed to cleanse the soul
To help heal, to let grief have its way
Don't hold back when you've suffered loss
It's part of life's many seasons
Cold winter before spring

Let's keep the best of those we knew
Keep and cherish in our hearts
Never forgotten, held in God's arms
A special part, that still remains
