. After having been left for dead twice due to heavy enemy barrages; his half-track blown up by a German mine; trapped and paralyzed inside the vehicle for hours, along with two other seriously injured soldiers; bleeding internally; the ground quaking beneath him and his ribcage being pounded from the tremendous air concussions from enemy bombardment engulfing them; his bootless bleeding feet, swollen, frozen, and cut; a broken nose from a flying German helmet which was still attached to the head it belonged to; and suffering from Combat Fatigue, Private "Boston Blackie" endured the worst possible insult, being betrayed by the very Army he fought and almost died for. For 125 non-stop days in the Hells of War, with no food, no relief, frozen in Europe's worst winter, he along with his Regiment and his entire unit received: the Presidential Unit Citation, The Belgium and French Croix de Guerre's, plus three Campaign Battle Stars among others. He also earned The Combat Infantryman's Badge with a Bronze Star, the Good Conduct Medal, a Bronze Star for killing 78 enemy combatants and taking 129 Germans prisoners; was put in for the Purple Heart for his injuries and his Lieutenant put him in for the Silver Star, for saving the lives of his men.
He achieved all this, and yet, those non-combatant officers who held the
power of life and death in their hands used it mercilessly against our
own combat soldiers. These non-combatant officers who hid from the terrible
and horrific reality of war - using their desks as a shield to keep far
away from the front lines - proved their cowardliness in the stark vengeance
they perpetrated against honored soldiers of war! They earned the
name of dishonor and disgrace by those who tasted the hell of battle and
survived, they called them: "Chicken....!"
