ALBUQUERQUE, NM - At the age of 16, Jennifer Greenberg took the next step on the motor sports ladder by driving her Yamaha powered Stealth chassis to an incredible 2nd place finish in the Mini Sprint main event Saturday night at Sandia Motor Speedway. This was Greenberg's first race in this class which features scaled down open wheel sprint cars with 120 horsepower motorcycle engines that reach 80 mph speeds on the tight ¼ mile oval. In the preliminary heat race Greenberg started 9th and moved to 5th by the end of the 10-lap race. After making minor car setup changes and critiquing her driving, her team had hopes of a better finish in the main event. She started the 25 lap main event from the 8th position and worked her way through the field to finish 2nd by a comfortable margin.
"I've spent the last 15 months gaining valuable experience racing quarter midgets. We have been doing very well there but this is the last year that I can run those cars. The Mini Sprint class is a great next step that several other quarter midget racers have taken. Tonight's race was an incredible experience. I had really hoped to just go out and run a respectable race and not embarrass myself. My dad did a great job setting up the car, so it was really up to me to drive it well. Finishing 2nd was incredible, but I really just want to continue to gain experience and improve my driving - the wins will take care of themselves. Because I am so young and I am a girl, some people have questioned my ability and my desire, but I am very motivated to keep racing."
As a 3rd generation racer, Greenberg has benefited from the guidance and advice of her family. Her father, Lyle Greenberg, has been a winning driver in drag racing, SCCA road racing and oval track racing for over 30 years. Greenberg noted that her father provided extensive coaching to both herself and her younger sister Rachel who also races in the quarter midget class.
Greenberg's next event is the Mini Sprint race at Sandia Motor Speedway on July 16. She will continue to represent marketing partners Amsoil, Cabinet Concepts and SunCo Equipment and Supply.
