Arts and Crafts
furniture is typically made from white oak sawn to reveal beautiful grain patterns.
This project uses 38 board ft. of rough sawn white oak in thickness of 1-1/4",
1-1/2" and 2".
The unusual beauty
of the wood in Arts and Crafts furniture comes from quarter sawing
which is characterized by quartering the tree and cutting boards from the quarters.
Quarter sawn wood shows relatively parallel end grain patterns.
Quarter sawing
results in straight grain, stable wood that often reveals rays and flecks.
