Kitchen Table - Decofrench™ Style

Original furniture design can present some interesting challenges.

For example, a client and her husband had very different preferences in furniture styles. She liked Art Deco with its clean lines, lightness and colors; he preferred French Country with its curving panels, weight, and natural wood tones.   The Decofrench™ style evolved.

The design problem could be solved if elements from both could be combined to reflect the influence of both styles. The design process begins by analyzing and distilling significant features that "make" a style. The difficulty comes with integrating the features of various styles in a pleasing, functional manner. Ultimately, of course, the clients must be excited about the design.

The first piece would be a table for a small kitchen area.

The functional requirements for the table consisted of: generally rectangular shape with roomy seating for six, no extension required, extra width for serving platters to remain on the table, seating orientation conducive to conversation, comfortable sub-structure with minimum leg interference.

The overall shape of the table was a modified elliptical pattern with stepped edging. The stepped edging motif carried through the apron and legs in two directions. Mortise and tenon joinery was used throughout.

A solid walnut hardwood top combines sap wood and heartwood. Multiple coats of polyurethane protect the top from water. Interference green mixed into the custom paint color  provided a deco-like pearlescent finish on the pine base.

If the design succeeded and  held interest (over time), complimentary pieces would be added.

Six months later, the client asked for a mirror and wall shelf in a similar design.

Price varies depending upon design and features.
