What Do the Test Scores Mean?

You got your test scores back--now what does all that gibberish mean? To interpret your readings, the American Heart Association and Prevention offer the following guidelines.

Total Cholesterol
Desirable: less than 100 mg/dL
Borderline: 200 to 239 mg/dL
High: 240 mg/dL or higher

If your total cholesterol is less than 100 mg/dL and you have no other risk factors, you're not very likely to develop heart disease. On the other hand, a reading in the borderline range is reason for caution. Even if you have no other risk factors, you should try to get your total cholesterol below 200 mg/dL.

If your total cholesterol falls in the high category, it's definitely a red flag. It means you're even more likely to develop heart disease than someone in the borderline category. You may be especially vulnerable if you have other risk factors. You should consult your doctor about further testing and treatment options.

LDL
Optimal: less than 100 mg/dL
Near optimal: 100 to 129 mg/dL
Borderline high: 130 to 159 mg/dL
High: 160 to 189 mg/dL
Very high: 190 mg/dL or higher

If your LDL reading is in the borderline-high or high categories, your doctor will evaluate your other risk factors to determine if you need to lower your LDL level.

HDL

Desirable: 45 mg/dL or higher

On average, men have HDL in the range of 40 to 50 mg/dL; women, in the range of 50 to 60 mg/dL. Your doctor can tell you if you need to raise your HDL level.
