New Firmware Announced at PMA 2000

Olympus has announced a new firmware for their C-2500L cameras.  Cameras shipped by Olympus after February 15, 2000 (new stock number will be 225 092; original number was 225 090) will have the new firmware already installed.  Although the upgrade is considered minor, it will include:

A "medium" option for sharpening.  The new settings will be Normal-1, Normal-2, and Soft (with Normal-2 being the new mode.)  Normal-2 offers a greater range of contrast that is less likely to wash out areas subject to high light intensity or blacked out in areas subject to low light.

Addition of  slow synchro flash for auto mode.

AE lock will now work in center meter mode.

The auto white balance has been improved.  Now you can capture more natural color tones when shooting outdoors.

Exposure compensation is automatically reset to +/-0 EV when the power is switched off.

Software version 09-0120; previous version was 09-0117.

It is not necessary to upgrade the firmware in your C-2500L as the camera already takes high quality pictures.  This new firmware upgrade will only give you a few extra options not presently available on the camera.

When you send your camera to Olympus, only the firmware upgrade will be done.  No camera checks will be performed.  If you are in need of camera repair, please call Olympus for authorization.

It is recommended that you contact Olympus for authorization and confirmation of wait time prior to sending the camera in for upgrade.  If C-2500L owners all send their cameras in for upgrade at the same time, the wait time may be longer than the estimated 10 business day wait.  Be sure to keep a copy of your camera serial number for your reference.

European Owners:

Check your Olympus website (go to the C-2500L page, click on benefits; you will see link for firmware v.1.20 update.)  The update costs DM 59 and will include a technical check of your camera and return shipping.  This upgrade is only available within Europe.

Far East Owners:

Check your Olympus website for further details on upgrading your camera with the new firmware.

Singapore:  contact Hagemeyer @ 377-5757.  You will have to bring camera down to service center at Alexandra Technopark Tower B #01-05/08.  Cost is approximately S$51.50 and turnaround time is about 2-3 days.

In addition to the new firmware, newly manufactured C-2500L cameras may now be compatible with Olympus' new lithium manganese batteries.  At this time it doesn't appear that existing owners will be able to use the new lithium manganese batteries as it requires a slightly different shape for the battery compartment.  Additional information concerning any upgrades for existing C-2500L owners will be provided here as soon as any information is released by Olympus.

NEVER open the card compartment cover, eject the card, remove the batteries, or disconnect the AC adapter while the camera is in operation (card access lamp will blink to indicate activity.) The data on the card may be destroyed.

NEVER open the battery cover while the camera is on. Not only will set modes and/or the clock be reset but the images may be destroyed.

Do not aim camera directly at the sun when taking pictures. This could damage the camera's CCD.

If the aperture is set at O, smear may occur in the picture in areas where there is a bright object (ex, reflected sunlight). This is a normal characteristic of the CCD. Should this happen, reset to a smaller aperture.

When the batteries run out while taking pictures, the power may turn off. If the low battery warning lights and the frame number blinks, the picture just taken was not recorded properly. Retake the picture after replacing the batteries.

When taking pictures in the super macro mode, the camera needs to be at the edge of "wide" mode; the camera will not focus in the telephoto position and the pictures will be blurry.

The built-in flash can be used when taking pictures in the super macro mode although the lens barrel will cast a shadow over the subject. When shooting in the super macro mode, the optional Wide Conversion lens (WCON-08) and Macro Conversion lens (MCON-40) cannot be used.

When spot metering and using the built-in flash there is a preliminary flash (for metering) when pressing the shutter button halfway. The regular flash will go off when depressing the shutter button fully to take the picture. You might want to warn your subjects about the preflash.

It is recommended to set white balance to the auto mode when taking flash-lit images. Color temperature should be set to 6500K when using flash and manual white balance.

Never fire the AF illuminator at close range to anybody's face. It employs a rather directional LED that can cause slight damage to your eyes.

The power button will not operate when the card access lamp is blinking.

Handle SmartMedia cards with care. Do not touch the contact area; do not subject it to physical shocks.  Never pull the SmartMedia out when attempting to remove it from the camera; always push it in to eject it from the camera. When the write-protect adhesive seal is placed on the sm card you will not be able to format it. Formatting erases all data on the card.

When saving or erasing files from a computer using a PC card adapter, the minimum number of remaining pictures available may decrease. Formatting the card from the camera will reset the number of remaining pictures to the correct amount.

Do not insert the CompactFlash card upside down. Doing so may damage the card. Push the "eject" button gently when removing the cf card; pushing strongly may cause the card to burst out.

Do not touch the surface of the LCD. This can leave a blur on the monitor and pushing hard may break it.

When connecting the camera to the computer it is recommended that the AC adapter be used.

When displaying images on a TV, it is recommended that the AC adapter be used. The image due to TV adjustments may appear off-center. A black frame may appear around the image, which if sent from the TV to a video printer will also appear on the printed image.
