From Gus Phillips of South Lane RC Modelers

Guy Oliver's Warbirds Over the Pacific.

Link to INFO on South Lane's web site -  http://www.southlanerc.net/index.php?showtopic=14

I just wanted you to know about recent events at our club.  I don't know if you all know Mr. Guy Oliver but he has been one of the original members of South Lane since it's start up.  I would like for you to produce a news article letting everyone know what is going on with Guy and a little about his military career for the members of the Eugene Aeronauts.

Guy Oliver was recently diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer.  We are going to lose him to this in a short time.  It is sad to see our friends who are older die off one by one.  He will be the second this year we have lost since our treasurer Don Lutes passed away earlier this year.  There is something special about Guy that I want to preserve to his memory when he passes; his military career as an F4U fighter pilot for the USMC.  I interviewed him recently about his career and discovered we actually have a war hero on our hands.  He flew 81 missions against the Japanese in WWll in the pacific theatre.  He has earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, The Air Medal, and a Purple Heart.  On 12 of those missions he actually tangled with the Zeros to earn the Air Medal.  On his 81st mission, he was nailed and the engine of his F4U burst into flames and filled the cockpit.  He told me it was like being in a blast furnace for 15 seconds.  He was trained to hold his breath and close his eyes while he got out of the fiery death trap.  He rolled his plane on it's back, unbuckled and pushed the stick forward inverted while he opened the canopy and fell out of the aircraft 70 miles out to sea.  Imagine hitting the saltwater with 3rd degree burns.  He was picked up and brought home in a stretcher.  Quite a story from someone who actually lived the experience we imagine everytime we go up.

The RC Modelers has recently voted unanimously to produce a flying event built around Guy Oliver's career.  It will be called Guy Oliver's Warbirds Over the Pacific.  It is to be scheduled in the middle of July next year that has been researched to be the best time to not conflict with other district events.  Jim Yourdan will be officiating as the CD.  The opening ceremony will include a USMC color guard and flag raising timed with a flight of large F4U's to conduct a low level pass on the runway.  The event theme will be designed to honor WWll veterans of all theatres and preserve the memory of Guy Oliver and the USMC aviators.  His Ziroli Corsair will be built and flown by his stepson and will be made up to represent Guy's personal aircraft.  This flying event will be a two day event Starting Saturday AM and will host overnight camping with Motor homes, tents, etc.  There will be serious prizes given out in a raffle where you earn a ticket everytime a pilot takes off and lands.  The event will have a few restrictions.  Only Warbirds of WWll vintage with a proven service record starting from 1939 to 1945 will be allowed to be entered.  The details of the event are still in it's design, they will be announced at a later date in the form of a flyer or email.

I wanted to give you a early heads up to announce this in your website as well as club meetings to give all interested parties an opportunity to prepare for the event next year and to announce to all who know Guy Oliver his grave illness.  Any further questions please write me at gusp@centurytel.net.
