Vivien D'Andrea, M.D.

Dr. Vivien D'Andrea, along with Lori Stotko OTR, CHT, formed "Performing Arts Medical Care" in 1990 in order to coordinate the medical care of musicians between physician and therapist. She received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and Stanford University. She served as Chief Resident at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. She is a member of the clinical faculty of Stanford University , is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and is currently the Medical Director of Los Altos Medical Clinic. She is also the Chair of the Department of Medicine of Camino Medical Group, a 150-physician multi-specialty group practice.

Because of her lifetime involvement with music, Dr. D'Andrea has pursued special studies in the newly developing field of medicine for performing artists. She is located at the Los Altos Medical Clinic where she evaluates musicians and offers information. She has played the piano, violin, and viola since childhood and has several years of experience teaching music. She is active as a professional violist with a number of Bay Area ensembles and with her own group, the Amati String Quartet.

A detailed consultation and physical examination to determine the nature and extent of the injury will include a careful study of posture and motor function. Further evaluation may be conducted using video taped recordings of the musicians in actual performance. Musical ergonomics are discussed , including advice on proper playing positions and instrument adaptations. If continued treatment is necessary, referrals to occupational therapy are available and an evaluation will be with a therapist with special expertise in the treatment of musicians. Referral to other specialists is arranged as needed.

Dr. D'Andrea is available for speaking engagements on the subject of performing arts medicine and workshops on the prevention of performance-related injuries.
