BRIEF INTRODUCTION TO THE FAMILY
The various spellings of the surname
confound the effort to sort out this group. The original spelling was likely
Ramstein (as in the German city.) A marriage recorded in Philadelphia,
Pa. (1761) for a Heinrich Ramstein probably pertains to our ancestor.
Among Henrich's children and grandchildren we see of all the spelling variations
in use today. The Family described here begins with references to Jon.
Henrich Sr. in Chester Co. Pa., where he resided on 7 acres of land with
his wife Elizabeth and 3 children; John, Jon. Henrich Jr. and Ann. The
son, John, apparently stayed on the property and his line persists to the
present time. Wills by Henrich Sr. and his wife Elizabeth exist. He was
a farmer with one horse and 2 head of cattle. The son, Henrich Jr. moved
to Central Pa. before 1810. He died in Perry Twp. of Union Co. (now Snyder
Co.) in 1822; he was a blacksmith. With his first wife, Elizabeth, he had
two daughters. With his second wife, Mary Arbogast there were 7 children.
The lines from his 3 sons are traced. The children of Jacob (b. 1812) and
Hanna are known by name only. In Jacob's family both the Rahmstine and
Rhymestine spelling occur. Jacob's brother George Roland Rhymestine, Sr.'s
birthday is in question, listed as 1824 or 2 years after the death of the
father. George Roland Sr.'s line preserved the spelling of the name to
the present time. Henry III and Elizabeth Mertz had 4 children, one, Robert,
died in his youth. John Rahmstine is a presumed son of Henry III (apparently
born when Henry was in his middle teens). If so, John remained in Union
Co. Pa. after the other family members, moved to Avilla, Indiana about
1854. This was shortly after John married and before he joined the Union
Army. John Rahmstine married Jane Elizabeth
Specht
in Beavertown, Snyder Co. Pa. in 1852. There is scant evidence John actually
belonged to this line except his first child Catherine may have been named
after a 'favorite great-aunt' and the second child was named the feminine
of 'Henry'. He was killed near Petersburg, Va., 10/5/1864, during his second
enlistment in the Union Army. He is buried in Popular Grove National Cemetery.
A grandson, John Rufus, Sr., graduated the Naval Academy (Class of 1924)
and later became Chairman of Corn Products Co. (now the CPC conglomerate.)
