Service and Outreach Statement

SERVICE TO MY INSTITUTION
On graduate admissions duty, my colleagues and I have attracted more competitive students to our program, especially minority students. On the advisory board of the Child Development Laboratory, I established an early childhood foreign language program, which also enhanced undergraduate education as undergraduate students became language instructors.
At the university level, a colleague and I initiated a collaborative exchange with South African faculty involved in child welfare. I continue to be involved in teaching and professional development training.
SERVICE TO MY PROFESSION
I am a member of the American Psychological Society, the Society for Teaching of Psychology, the Society for Research and Child Development, and the International Society for the Study of Behavioral Development. I have organized 3 international symposia in Quebec, Berne, and Beijing (proposals available). I have reviewed for the Spencer Foundation and for American Psychologist, Abnormal Psychology, the International Journal of Behavioral Development, and other journals.
SERVICE TO MY COMMUNITY AND BEYOND
I have been active in the Board of Directors for the local United Nations Association. We have raised money to remove land mines and lobbied for Senate ratification of the UN Treaty on the Rights of the Child. To educate Americans in this effort, I have written editorials and appeared in television interviews.
Currently I am helping a local non-governmental agency in outreach efforts to Bosnian refugees in the Sacramento area.
