V. What to look for in the next reading...
A. The next reading is mainly on normative development in infancy (say the first 24 months). I think that the MOST important part for therapists is the development of emotion regulation in infants. So spend less time reading about cognitive and language changes (put please read as this will become important later when we talk about attachment). Spend more time reading about
1. Regulation of arousal: how do parents regulate children’s arousal?
2. Temperament and self-regulation: how do parents help children learn to regulate their own arousal-----even difficult children
3. The development of an infant’s “theory of mind” and self-awareness: When does this typically develop? Do any disorders interfere with this social and self-awareness?
4. I’ll try to make my next quiz questions “very-short answer” so look for key terms, etc. Don’t worry about names except Piaget.
5. NOT URGENT! FOR YOUR INFORMATION. If you are interested in a different approach to helping children that tries to go away from the traditional at-risk approach, check out www.search-institute.org/assets. Again, not urgent not on test but useful.
