II. | Essay 5: Play Therapy
 1. | This is a combination class activity, in which you work with a partner, and an essay, in which you write by yourself. The purpose of this activity and essay is to think more critically about the difficulties and applications of play therapy. Put yourself in the role of a play therapist and a child client.
 2. | Step 1: I will assign you to a table which contains a kit of play materials (e.g., blocks, dolls, clay, etc). In the kit you will find an index card that simply provides the age, gender, and history of the child. DO NOT SHARE THE HISTORY OF THE CHILD WITH OTHER TEAMS. Plan the role of the therapist and the client given what you know about play therapy as described throughout the textbook. Note a “script” for your role play. You will be presenting a 5 minute role play to your classmates. Rehearse. (about 20 minutes).
 3. | Step 2: You will return to your seats and watch a 36 minute video on play therapy. I recommend that you take notes on this video so as to improve your script and your essay.
 4. | Step 3: Return to your play table and make final changes in your script. Rehearse. (about 15 minutes)
 5. | Step 4: Present your 5 minute role-play to the class. And listen very carefully to the role plays of your peers. This is important for your essays. (5 minutes each x 6 teams = about 45 minutes)

 6. | Step 5: In your essay I want you to do the following:

 a. | Briefly describe your play session (much as Davies describes his play sessions in the text)
 b. | Provide your interpretation of what, if anything, your child is trying to express. Does the child have some underlying problem or trauma? If your child seems to have no problem or trauma how is his or her play reflective of his or her cognitive development (e.g. interests, social-perspective taking, egocentrism, etc).
 c. | Do you believe that this method, play therapy, is a valid means to diagnosis children?
