4. A study funded by a health maintenance organization collected 50 drawings from 50 teens that were abused in early childhood and 50 drawings from 50 teens that were not abused. The drawings were copied and distributed to art therapists. Therapists were asked to identify drawings from abused and non-abused teens. Results indicated that therapists were no more accurate than chance in accurately identifying drawings from abused and non-abused teens. This study proves that art therapy should not be used to diagnose psychological problems and that is it ineffective in helping teens. Therefore, HMOs should not cover it but allocate funds to more effective therapies.
