Photoshop Tutorial: Layer Concepts
| As
a general rule, After opening an image for editing, one should
always create a duplicate layer to work on. This allows
multitudes of adjustments to be made, and balanced with each other,
without loss of pixel data from the original. Adding
"Adjustment Layers" for basic color balance, contrast,
density, and hue are a must. These layers can always be
revisited for tweaking later during the editing process.
Converting selections into layers also allows complete control over
the blending of selections into the final result.
Shown below is what I
believe to be the best book available, covering most of the intermediate to advanced capabilities of Photoshop 7 and CS. I
have gained valuable workflows from this book.

Photoshop Tutorial: Eliminating A Nasty Color Cast
|
Color correction with known neutral grey: Use eyedropper (i) to select offending color. Add new layer, fill with the selected foreground color. Next, image / adjust / invert. Next set the new layer to color blending mode, and 50 percent opacity...Your neutral grey will return, and all is good with the world. Once again we see inclusion of grey cards in a reference photo to be invaluable for color balance. If no grey card is available, choose an area you believe to be grey. The selection should always be made from a midtone area! Color correction without a known neutral grey: Add a "Levels Adjustment" layer. Click "Options" and Check: "Find Dark And Light Colors", and the "Snap Neutral Midtones" buttons. Click "Save As Defaults" and click "OK" to accept options. Now you may use the Image / Adjust / Auto Levels with more pleasing results. |
Photoshop Sharpening Technique
The key to sharpening digital images is to not "overdo" it.
I copy the background layer of the image, then apply the High Pass filter, native to Photoshop.
Once the layer has been filtered, I change the Blend Mode to "Hard Light",
and adjust the transparency to suite the image.
This technique allows you to adjust the amount of edge sharpening 2 ways...
using the filter options (pixels), and using the layer
Blending Transparency percentage.
