Schuler Shook
Theatre consulting internship
April to November 2008
Chicago, IL

Schuler Shook consults on many types of performance spaces: professional theatre, university performing arts buildings, gymacafatoriums (multi-purpose spaces for K-12), opera houses and high school theatres. Most projects are in the office for three to five years and have several phases: schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration.

Since a project has such a long life, I was not able to see one project all the way through but I was able to work with projects in most of the categories and in all of the
phases. In my time with the company I visited ten job sites, worked on nine active projects, and completed twelve research projects.

As well as project work, I spent a lot of time on research projects. The largest was a stage floor paint test. Also, the office was revising their rigging specification—a document which Schuler Shook submits to the project construction manual and details everything from the type of installers Schuler Shook will accept to the type of hardware used to install head blocks. When questions
arose, I was the one to go find the answers and bring them to the group at the next session.
