Before: the bar, between what will become the only entry to the kitchen on the left and the existing sliding door which will be cabineted-over on the right.
After: Bar opens into kitchen and has enough room for coffee equipment. Pocket door replaced by pantry. Puck lights and glass shelves in the upper cabinet.
Before: Cabinets over the stove. Small room.
After: Cabinets over the sink instead of the range, raised breakfast bar, and MUCH taller stools.
Before: A basic U-shaped kitchen, but with only enough room for one butt. Dark 1970s cabinetry with inefficient use of space.
After: still U-shaped, but room for 4.5 butts. Alder cabinets enabling use of every possible cubic inch.
Before: useless window looking out on dirt, tiny sink, no work area. Hideous flourescent and track lights that barely worked. Painted wall with lots of food-splatter stains.
After: useful cabinets, a double sink, and way more work area. Recessed low-voltage halogen lights in the ceiling, flourescent under-cabinet lights, and puck lights over the sink. Tile backsplash so that food splatters wipe right up.
Before: crappy range, no work surface, cabinets and useless hood overhead.
After: Wolf range with grill, lots of work surface, raised breakfast bar behind backsplash, Vent-a-hood and pot rack overhead.
Before: no particular breakfast bar. Bookshelves for cookbooks, pantry overflow, and kitty dining room in the music room.
After: 45" breakfast bar and 36" (tall!) stools. Kitty dining room upstairs in the master suite.
After: cookbooks and pantry where the pocket door used to be.
Before: the middle room was the dining room.
After: the middle room has hardwood flooring and is the music room. This room is still a bit of a mess and lacks a grand piano.
Before: Foyer entry tiles of cracked gray marble.
After: Brazilian slate tile (same as kitchen floor and backsplash).
Before: the back room was the music room, and the white oak hardwood was an ugly dark brown with stains. Wooden window sill.
After: the back room is the dining room, and the hardwood has been sanded and refinished. Granite window sill.
