This Little Routine
Saturday, July 24, 2004

I really enjoy this little routine of eating, working and sleeping with the occassional visit with friends popping up here and there. Life is fulfilling and busy--sometimes too busy but the overwhelming feeling never lasts for long. Today is Saturday, and I will be closing at the wonderful world of Starbucks with my quirky but ever-cheery manager. I am now a certified barista. yahoo.

In other news, I have moved to North Seattle between Northgate and Shoreline. I have my own room, which is all I need when it comes to a longing for personal space, and I have lots of company in the house when I venture outside my little sanctuary. I live on the main floor near the back of the house, which during the day is full of activity because it's the same floor as the computers, kitchen, dining room, and TV room. The family who owns the house has recently gone from a family of three to four. Marc and Kate are Mommy and Daddy, 3 1/2 year old Caius and 3 week old Mira are honey bun and princess. They spend most of their time here on the main floor but have their personal living space in the attic, which was converted into bedrooms and a bathroom. I've never ventured up into the attic and they make sure to knock if they want to see me in my room, even with the door wide open. It's nice. Down in the basement is the the laundry along with two other bedrooms for Alissa and Saraha, my housemates who just happen to be 25. Very nice for me when all othe friends my age are getting married and having kids. Kate herself is only 29 and it's nice to have Alissa and Sarah to remind that single is still somewhat normal for women my age. Alissa is a model who works at (where else?) Starbucks on the side, and Sarah works at REI. All of us are Christians, and that's very nice. We all have chores too, but I took on some extra ones to make up for a deal in rent. They took it on faith that I would be a good housemate because I go to their church and one of their former favorite housemates is a friend of mine. Kate loves Costco and really treats us all like family, because meals with the family are included in rent. Unfortunately, most of us are working or busy during meal times, but I am assured of at least one meal on Tuesday, when I do the cooking.

Tuesday is my one guaranteed day "off", meaning I won't be at Starbucks. Still, it is packed. Whenever I'm at home I'm doing dishes (we all have assigned days for dishes), but from 9:30am until 1:30pm I'm volunteering at church, and then I go straight to a ladies tea and Bible study from 2 to 4pm. Then I have to be home to make dinner and do dishes. Marc has Netflix so we usually watch a movie too. Last week it was Mystic River.
The only bad part of my situation is temporary, and that's the commute. Luckily I've been working odd hours. With no traffic I can get across the bridge to the Eastside in 1/2 hour, but in rush hour I'd be moving at a crawl for up to two hours. I've taken to books on tape to fill the time.
