What is AKC Limited Registration - Pet Only Mean?

Our puppies are sold with AKC Limited Registration Eligibility.  This is no different than the large majority of other breeders out there.  Many breeders don't openly disclose this or don't post it where it is apparent or not.  This might not be intentional still it can have serious ramifications since the buyer might later feel cheated.  Most breeders do not offer Full AKC registration without charging a substantial amount of extra money or they don't offer it at all.  The problem is that I have read online and also heard, where a buyer complained that they didn't know this about the dog that they purchased from another breeder.  They were upset because they thought that the dog could be bred or showed.  They felt ripped off when they found out otherwise. Most people won't be concerned with this.  They really don't care one way or another because they are really only concerned with getting a good quality pet and don't want to breed it or show it anyway.

Pet only means must be fixed. Breeding rights are not granted. Can't be bred.

AKC Limited Registration means that you can't show the dog in "AKC breed competition or licensed or member dog show". I've also included the terms on the contract so that the buyer knows what he/she is getting.

Chapter 3, Section 4A of the AKC's Rules Applying to Registration and Discipline states the following: "Limited Registration may be requested for a dog when application for individual registration of the dog is submitted, provided the application, together with a request for such limitation, is filed by the owner(s) of the litter at birth.

No offspring of a dog for which Limited Registration has been granted is eligible for registration. Each registration certificate for such dog shall carry notice of the limitation, and the limitation shall continue, regardless of any change of ownership, unless and until the owner(s) of the litter at birth shall apply to AKC for removal of the limitation."

A dog registered with an AKC Limited Registration shall be ineligible to be entered in a breed competition in a licensed or member dog show. It is eligible, however, to be entered in any other licensed or member event. These events include: Obedience, Tracking, Field Trials, Hunting Tests, Herding, Lure Coursing, Agility and Earthdog.

Limited Registration is determined by the litter owner(s). The litter owner(s) check the Limited box on the AKC Dog Registration Application.
