"Gopher it!" - LOC Minie Magg

Magg-1.jpg (15593 bytes)My LOC Minie Magg is my most-flown high power rocket.  Its maiden flight was on September 13, 1997 at a Minnesota Tripoli launch.  For motor retention, it has provisions for three "Kaplow Klips".  For parachute protection, it uses a Rocketman Heat Shield.  Recovery is usually by a Rocketman R7 chute.  Everything else is stock and per the kit instructions except for the enormous epoxy fin fillets and the extra nose weight (lead & epoxy).  No fiberglass or anything like that.

I originally built this rocket during the fall of 1996 / winter of 1997 with the intent of using it for my level 1 high power certification flight.  However, I thought better of using a short, stubby rocket for that purpose and ended up building & flying a LOC EZI-65 instead.

In honor of my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, I painted this rocket in Maroon & Gold with decals cut from a bumper sticker and gold pin striping.  It's a regular (and recognized) fixture at Minnesota Tripoli launches where I try to fly it at least a couple times each year.  Over the years, it has gotten a bit dinged-up, but it still flies great.  Unlike many Minie Magg's which can weathercock severely, this one always flies straight up (usually like a bullet!)

Temporarily stretched to create the J350-powered "Mega Magg", I used this rocket to earn my level 2 certification in July of 1999.

Stats:  length 36.5", diameter 5.5", empty weight 56 oz

The 7/31/99 flight was at LDRS 18 in Argonia, Kansas.  It has landed in a cornfield at least once.  The worn-out stock LOC chute was replaced at the beginning of 1999.
