| Old City Center |
| I stayed a "short" walk from the old city center. Therefore, I did a lot of walking through this pedestrian
friendly zone. During World War II, the center of Munich suffered heavy damage from Allied bombers. After the war, under the Marshal Plan, the citizens of
Munich rebuilt and an effort was made to preserve this historic center the city (Steves, 2006).

The Residenz was the royal palace for the Wittelsbach family, rulers of Bavaria for over 700 years. The original palace was modeled after Medici family's palace in Florence. However, over the course of 700 years,
it grew and grew and grew to this massive sprawling complex. Like the town center, the palace suffered heavy bomb damage during World War II. Fortunatly, much of the treasures were hidden away and the "Fathers" of
Munich chose to rebuild this palace. Here are some of my many pictures of the complex.

| During the 1500 and 1600's what we know as Germany and Italy did not exist. Instead there were tiny Dukedoms that cemented alliances by marrying off their daughters to other powerful Dukedoms. One such case was one of the Duke of Savoy married his daughter to the Bavarian Duke Ferdinade Maria. When Ferdinade's wife, Henriette Adelaide, finally had a son he gave her some land outside of town. Henriette then had Nymphenburg Palace and Gardens built in Grand Baroque style. I enjoyed a pleasant morning wandering through the gardens among joggers and other tourists. The grounds are well maintained and it makes you forget that you are in a big city.
