Barcelona is Spain’s second largest city and is the proud capital of the region known as Catatonia.
Before the age of discovery this was a major Mediterranean port. Then when the Americas were discovered,
it lost its importance and settled into a back water. However, at the turn of the century (1900 that is),
the city started a comeback and became one of the chique centers in Europe. With the art-nuvoue movement in full swing,
Barcelona launched into a major metropolis.
Therefore, the city is really a mixture of old and new. The cozy Gothic quarter with its huge Gothic Cathedral is a throwback to the time it was a major Mediterranean port. However, stumble just a few blocks and you discover the Ramblas with all of its trendy coffee shops. At the end, you find your self in a major shopping heaven. Of course one can not mention Barcelona with out mentioning its art. Though there is a Picaso Museum, with a few of his more famous paintings, the city is known for one great Architect. That is Gaudi. Known for his ornate shapes and creative, dreamlike designs, Gaudi’s building are the cities proudest accomplishments. They make you say Wow. The most famous is the Sacred Family church. (One note, try to take pictures in the middle of the day) With its 8, 800 ft spires and ornate sculptures this building is very impressive. Photos do not do it justice. This is a sight to behold. Barcelona also has a feel to it that I believe my photos do not capture. I can’t really describe what it was. However, I was so caught up in this atmosphere my photos completely missed capturing it. Barcelona is a town to experience. Everyone says that and I agree. Lastly, I misplaced my photos of the Gothic quarter, that is why I don’t have any pictures of the cathedral here. I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, . |
