Madrid is the capital city of Spain. However as European capitals go, Madrid is a relatively young capital. Four hundred years ago King Philip moved the capital of Spain from Toledo to Mad rid. Philip did this so the capital would be in the exact center of the country. Toledo also had reached its limit in terms of how big it could grow. Madrid is said to be the highest (in elevation) European capital, a fact that I am not 100 percent sure is true.

Since Madrid is a relatively young capital, and before it became the capital it was a back water village, the sites to see are relatively simple. On your first day (arrival day) you should spend a good chunk of time touring the royal palace which is one of the greatest palaces in Europe behind only Versailles in France and the summer palace in Vienna,Austria. The palace is a sight to behold in itself with richly decorated rooms and beautiful artwork. The rest of that day can be spent wandering around the city. Be sure to visit Retiro park and some of the other fine parks in the city. A second day in Madrid can be spent at the terrific art galleries (In which the in my humble opinion have some of the best Dali paintings around), and strolling the medieval quarter. Since three of those places don’t allow pictures inside, my pictures of this city are very brief.

There is also one more aspect of the Madrid experience. If you find the right place you see trendy locals parading up and down different streets to impress one another. One night of this, is quite entertaining. I hope you enjoy the photos. Any comments, please E-mail me, .
