Zurich is the financial, industrial and Comercial center of Switzerland (Rough Guide, 2005).
As to be expected of such a center, Zurich is also Switzerland's largest town. Zurich is located on the shores of scenic lake Zurich. If you visit Zurich, as most people do
either going into or leaving Switzerland, I recommend staying in the old town since it is attractive and has a quite active night life. Zurich's old town
is also near Bahnhof Strasse, the main shopping street. On a clear sunny day, something scarce on my last sortie into Switzerland, Lake Zurich offers a nice
relaxing place to sit and read while you people watch.
Zurich, like so many other Swiss cities, started life as a
Roman outpost (a customs post). Alas, aside from
a street named for the baths, there was nothing left of its Roman History. As can be expected of a city of one million, the city grew and grew
Pushing out form its origins around the Limmat river. It is now a bustling metropolis, full of busy business men and bankers.
But, as large cities go, it is also a very nice and safe feeling city. As for night life, the old town boasts numerous pubs and bars. Locals seem to prefer grabbing a bottle of wint
and heading up to Lindenhof Park. The people I went out with, saw the hordes of people sitting in the park overlooking the river and said
"we want to go there!"
Zurich is also a major European transportation hub. The rail station is called Rail City and it is indeed a small city
offering every convenience you could imagen, except for hotel rooms. But I encourage you, even if you are there just for an hour, to check your bag and explore the city
around the station.
