This is one of the first poems I had published, so I am very attached to it. It's a good poem to open a reading with - it gets the audience involved, although it is very different in tone from most of my more recent stuff. Men seem to like it, for some reason...
"Sending me half of that poem is like watching a porn without the money shot." -mg, on hearing half of Anna's poem, "Mother's Boys"
I wrote this as an ekphrastic exercise set by the Quick And Dirty Poets.
"Excellent Imagery! Appeals to all the senses." - Contest Judges, Great Blue Beacon.
I wrote this to a prompt for the Advanced Poetry Workshop I recently completed at Richard Stockton College. My professor gave me a lot of feedback on various revisions and this was his final comment, on hearing it had won First Prize at PWC 2005.
"That's great. You stayed with that poem for a long time until it fully yielded itself to you, and I'm delighted that you and the poem were properly rewarded" - Stephen DunnI admit, the subject matter of this one (incest) isn't exactly 'puppies and kittens.'
"Sorry. I just don't like it at all." - my mother.
