The English army, which controlled South Africa, attempted to invade and take the areas of Transvaal and the Orange Free States, which were occupied by the Boers, mainly Dutch European farmers. The British were initially pushed back, and were outmaneuvered and destroyed battle after battle by the smaller Boer forces. Finally, General Kitchener arrived and took over the British command, and instituted heartless commands to herd the Boer populations into concentration camps, and destroy all their property belongings and cattle. The concentration camps took on the role of death camps, because of overcrowding problems, and lack of food and water.
