The Ottoman Empire joined World War 1 on the side of the central powers, and while its forces fought against the British and French on the borders, the vast Empire held atrocities of the worst kind deep inside its territory. Armenia was a small part of the Ottoman Empire, but the Ottomans accused the Armenians of being against the Ottoman War effort and of supporting the British and Russians. The Armenians were forced to leave their villages in the hundreds of thousands, and were marched ruthlessly through the dessert. In the ensuing years, over 1 million Armenians died at the hands of the Ottomans.
