North Korean rolled across the 38th parallel in a tank-spearheaded surprise invasion of South Korea, quickly breaking through South Korean border countries, and pushing the UN and remaining Korean forces to a small area around the costal city Pusan. Meanwhile, the South Korean people were brought under terrible treatment by the advancing North Korean Army. Tank companies rolled right through villages, squashing everything in their way. Villagers were all expelled from their houses or shot, so the North Korean troops could use their houses for overnight shelter. In the course of the war, over 2 million Koreans died.
