1980-Present Essay

The Chechen flag

Throughout mans' history he has continued to commit horrid and heinous crimes against his fellow man continuing up until this very day.  Although most of mankind opposes these crimes they continue to happen.
The Conflict in Chechnya is a modern example of mans continuing ability to inflict pain and suffering upon people.  The Chechen province in southern Russia has been vying for independence since the collapse of the Soviet Union.  A bloody and dirty war ensued.  During the first war in 1994 Russia invaded the small province with overwhelming force crushing the initial resistance and killing an estimated 100,000 civilians.  Under Russian occupation the Chechens made life terrible by committing many gorilla attacks weakening their control.  The second Chechen war in 1999 was started when a number of terrorist attacks on a neighboring province Dagestan were blamed on Chechen rebels.  The Russians reoccupied the Chechen province and an estimated 60,000 civilians were killed.  These heavy losses of civilian lives cannot be compared with the deaths in Afghanistan.
Mans continuous wars of old are still causing hurt today.  Because of humans ever evolving kill devices many millions of innocent people have died all around the world.  In the country of Afghanistan this problem is most prevalent.  After the war with Russia in which the U.S backed the Afghani's with arms, over 724 million square meters of land were covered in land mines.  Each year twelve to fourteen million square meters are discovered.   In 1999 landmines injured a record ten to twelve people per day.  Almost all of these people are just regular civilians trying to make a living.  Many victims are women and children.  An estimated 400,000 people have died from landmines and millions more have been crippled.  Despite a large scale anti-mine operation, there are so many mines, that even if funding were to be doubled it would take seven to eight years to clear all the high priority mines and up to 20 years to remove them all.  This crime is an indirect crime resulting in two superpower arms race.
In Southern Europe in the early 90's there was a conflict between the Bosnians and the Serbs.  The Serbs are a minority concentrated in the lower portion of Bosnia.  They were unhappy because the Bosnian government wasn't treating them with the respect that they wanted.  There was an evident war brewing; the international media portrayed the Bosnians as right and the Serbs as wrong.  The evident conflict was brutal and bloody in which many died on either side.  The Serbians committed mass murders on the Bosnian civilian population because of their heritage.  An estimated two million Bosnians were killed and about a million were unrightfully murdered.  This crime was committed by fellow countrymen who disagreed. This demonstrates how cruel man can be.
A mass genocide was committed in the African country of Rwanda where in a period of 100 days an estimated 800,000 people died.  The people who were murdered were the Hutus and Tutsis.  Most of the people responsible for the genocide fled the country when the United Nations was called in to stop the killing.  Although dozens of top ranking government officials responsible for the genocide have been arrested and persecuted, there remain other top government officials who walk free.  This is yet another example of how twisted mans mind is, when he and his associates can kill 800,000 fellow countrymen for no reason.
Sometimes one man can be so evil he tries annihilating an entire people.  Like Hitler, Saddam Hussein was an evil man who used poisonous gas against a people that he felt was a threat.  Saddam launched dozens of missiles loaded with Mustard gas, Nerve agents, Anthrax spores, and Botulinum toxins against The Kurds.  The Kurds are a people located in northern Iraq.  Attacks were launched against the Iranian armies who were allied with The Kurds.  Many people say that thousands maybe even tens of thousands of people died, but other people claim that these attacks never happened.  But the evidence points to many Kurds having being killed.  Though these attacks were not classified as war crimes they still were heinous attacks against an innocent people re-assuring that mans' inhumanity can and will continue.
