Robespierre and The Reign of Terror

A Guillotine

Following the French revolution, in which King Luis XVI was forcibly removed from power, Robespierre grasped the opportunity to seize power in the countries turmoil. He became the countries head of The Committee of Public Safety in 1793. He began naming people that he called "traitors." He would call people traders for the most insignificant reasons. In one example, a baker sold bad bread to some soldiers and Robespiere called him a traitor. He was later killed at the guillotine. For such an insignificant thing as selling stale bread, a man was killed. Robespierre had good intensions, but was ultimately a plague to France. He was eventually killed by guillotine, in 1794. Robespierre forgot that he was human too.
The revolution was fought by the peasant population, ironically, 85% of the citizens guillotined, were peasants.
