Thomas Woodrow Wilson: Family Ties and Southern Perspectives, by Erick Montgomery, focuses on the life of the 28th President of the Unites States, the first Southerner elected to that office following the Civil War. Although his academic career as a college professor was in the Northeast, he was born in Virginia and spent his formative years in Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina. He lived in the Presbyterian Manse in Augusta, Georgia, in the 1860s while his father served as Pastor of the congregation that hosted the meeting that created the Presbyterian Church in the Confederate States. He watched as wounded and dying soldiers poured into Augusta, many to the make shift hospital set up at the Presbyterian Church, diagonally across the street from the Wilson's home. He witnessed captured Confederate President Jefferson Davis as he was brought through town under guard, and he looked up into the face of Condederate General Robert E. Lee during his final tour in 1870. Wilson began his education, grounded his Calvinist faith and emerged as a leader as President of the Light Foot Baseball Club while living in Augusta. He was a product of the Reconstruction era South.
The Wilson's home in Augusta,is now a house museum. This fully documented volume, serves as an in-depth examination of the Augusta manse while also expanding on the Southern experiences of Wilson and his family.
