First Christian
Church
629 Greene Street. Built as a
gift to the congregation by Mrs. Emily Harvie Thomas Tubman (1794-1885) between 1874 and
1876, this beautiful brick edifice cost $106,000 when it was constructed. Mrs. Tubman was
generous with her fortune, contributing to many causes throughout her long life. A
monument erected to her memory is located in the landscaped median on Greene Street in
front of the church building. (HD)
