Horace William Crane (1857- )
On 24 July 1860 Horace appeared on the 1860 federal census in the household of his grandfather, Stephen B. Crane, in Kalamazoo.5 His brother, Clinton Delevan Crane, may have died circa 28 June 1863.7 Horace was a brickmaker in 1876.6 Horace lived in South Haven, Van Buren County, Michigan, in 1876.6 Horace witnessed the marriage of his sister, Mary Alice Crane, to John Grant on 7 August 1876 in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana. An alert reader may notice what some might consider to be a somewhat scandalous fact that Horace's sister married the ex-husband of Horace's own wife, whom he married only a few months earlier.8
On 11 June 1880 Horace was enumerated as the head of the household in South Bend in the federal census of 1 June 1880. Nancy Crane, Elmira Grant, Mary A. Crane and Adelia Crane also lived there at the time of the enumeration. At the time of the census, Horace was employed as a bridge maker.9 His stepdaughter, Eliza, died on 9 June 1888 in Lee Township, Allegan County, Michigan, at age 17.10
On 8 June 1900 Horace was enumerated as the head of the household at 822 Lafayette in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, in the federal census of 1 June 1900. Nancy Crane, Mary A. Crane and Adelia Crane also lived there at the time of the enumeration. At the time of the census, Horace was said to be working as a day laborer. The record also tells us that the family owned their home on a mortgage. Horace's father and stepmother lived next door at 820 Lafayette.11 His wife, Nancy Loveland, died on 10 February 1906 in South Bend.12,4 Horace was a elevator man in 1907.1 Horace lived in South Bend in 1907.1 Horace and Alma Lillian Haight lived at 1206 McCartney Street in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, between 1909 and 1910 along with Lucyette Parmeter.13,14 His father, Joseph Delevan Crane, died on 14 November 1909 at the County Infirmary in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana.15,16,17 His mother, Lucyette Parmeter, died on 7 March 1910 at 1206 McCartney Street in South Bend at age 73.18,14 On 25 April 1930 Horace appeared on the 1930 federal census as an inmate at the Winnebago County Home in Oshkosh, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.19

Martin was born circa 1834. Martin was killed in action by a confederate sharpshooter on 28 March 1865 in Petersburg, Virginia.2,3 What is certain is that Martin Crane, son of Stephen B. Crane and Eunice McCarty, died sometime before June 1869. This evidence suggests that it's possible that the Martin Crane killed at Petersburg is the same man.4 If the two are the same, Martin was originally buried at Meade Station near Petersburg, Virginia, probably in a single shallow pit or mass grave.3 Martin was reburied between 1866 and 1869 at Poplar Grove National Cemetery in Petersburg, Virginia, by the U.S. Burial Corps.3

Mary Alice Crane (1858-1927)
On 27 June 1860 Mary appeared on the 1860 federal census in the household of her grandfather, Horace Parmeter, in Kalamazoo.11 On 24 July 1860 Mary appeared on the 1860 federal census in the household of her grandfather, Stephen B. Crane, in Kalamazoo.12 Her brother, Clinton Delevan Crane, may have died circa 28 June 1863.13 On 3 June 1870 Mary appeared on the 1870 federal census in the household of her grandmother, Sarah Parmeter, in Kalamazoo.14 Lucyette Parmeter and John Miller were made the legal guardians of Mary Alice Crane on 28 January 1873 in Kalamazoo.1 Witness:
When John married his second wife, Mary Alice Crane, in Indiana, Alice's brother, Horace, acted as a witness. Strangely enough, Horace himself had married John's ex-wife, Nancy Loveland Grant, only a few months earlier. According to Muryl Grant, John and Alice's grandson, John and Horace had come to know one another through itinerant work on pickle farms in Allegan County. Presumably this is how Horace met John's first wife and how John was introduced to Alice, Horace's younger sister. While we cannot know exactly how events transpired, the situation certainly has the flavor of a soap opera. Alice (as she was most often known) died on 20 January 1927 in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan. She was buried in Riverside Cemetery in that city.5,8,10,15 On 12 June 1880 Mary appeared on the 1880 federal census in the household of her husband, John Grant, in Goshen.16 Mary and John Grant lived at home on West Washington St. in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana, in 1886.17 Her daughter, Sarah, died on 26 March 1886 at her home in Goshen, Elkhart County, Indiana.5,17 Her stepdaughter, Eliza, died on 9 June 1888 in Lee Township, Allegan County, Michigan, at age 17.18 Mary was a washwoman in 1900.7
On 2 June 1900 Mary was enumerated as the head of the household at 70 Calhoun St. in Battle Creek, Calhoun County, Michigan, in the federal census of 1 June 1900. Clinton Grant also lived there at the time of the enumeration. Her daughter, Lucy, lived next door, where she was the housekeeper for Jonathon Johnson, whom she would later marry. It is uncertain why Alice and her youngest son were living apart from her husband and her other sons at the time (who continued to reside at the homestead in Lee Township in Allegan County), although it is possible that the reasons were primarily economic.7 Her daughter, Lucy married Jonathon Johnson on 24 December 1903 in Goshen.19 Mary and John Grant lived at 905 Gordon Place in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, between 1906 and 1908.20,21,22 Mary and John Grant lived at 1127 Seminary Street (now Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, Michigan, between 1909 and 1915.23,24,25,26,27,28 Her father, Joseph Delevan Crane, died on 14 November 1909 at the County Infirmary in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana.29,30,31 Her mother, Lucyette Parmeter, died on 7 March 1910 at 1206 McCartney Street in South Bend, St. Joseph County, Indiana, at age 73.32,4 On 19 April 1910 Mary appeared on the 1910 federal census in the household of her husband, John Grant, in Kalamazoo.6 Mary witnessed the marriage of her daughter, Lucy Etta Grant, to Frank Wesley Lurvey on 4 July 1912 in Kalamazoo.33 Her daughter, Lucy Etta Grant, died on 10 April 1913 in Kalamazoo.34 Her husband, John Grant, died on 23 April 1915 in Kalamazoo at age 66.35 Mary Alice Crane petitioned the court for the commitment of John D. Grant to the at Kalamazoo State Hospital on 18 October 1915.36
On 27 January 1920 Mary was enumerated as the head of the household at 1127 Seminary Street (now Riverview Drive) in Kalamazoo in the federal census of 1 January 1920. Clinton Grant and Harry William Havener also lived there at the time of the enumeration.37
