PROJECT HISTORY

The U.S.S. Farenholt (DD-491) History Preservation Project was started in spirit by Mr. John J. Miller, Historian, U.S.S. Farenholt Association in the early 1980s.  John dedicated himself to ensuring that the story of the U.S. Navy Destroyer U.S.S. Farenholt (DD-491) and her crew was told and preserved so the dedicated service of the ship and her crew were never to be forgotten.

John's tireless dedication and endless devotion to the task resulted in the publication of a comprehensive collection of Farenholt historical documents and reference material.

John's family, particularly his grandson Kenneth Tuma, was actively involved in assisting with the preservation of the Farenholt's legacy.  Kenneth spent his childhood and teenage years working under John's supervision to assist in this important endeavour.

Upon joining the U.S. Navy in 1992, Kenneth formally founded the independent Project with the specific goal of using existing and developing computer technologies to further the goal of "telling the story" and digitally preserving The Fighting Oscar's proud history - FOREVER.

Today, the Project is staffed by a group of volunteers dedicated to researching, documenting, and preserving for future generations the history of the Farenholt.  The Project will culminate in the most comprehensive, accurate, and globally accessible source of Farenholt information in existence.
