See if you can figure out what historical Christian figure or figures uttered these seldom heard gems to inspire the people to take up arms:

"Almighty God, bless our arms when the time comes; be just as thou has always been, judge now whether we be deserving of freedom; Lord, bless our battle!"

"May the sacred duty to act in this way give us determination, and above all may our faith protect us."

"And I consider the foundation or destruction of a religion far greater than the foundation or destruction of a state, let alone a party."

"For the political leader the religious doctrines and institutions of his people must always remain inviolable; or else he has no right to be in politics..."

Speaking about those who are against his social constructs..."To bring about such a development is, then, nothing else but to sin against the will of the eternal creator."

"The folkish-minded man, in particular, has the sacred duty, each in his own denomination , of making people stop just talking superficially of God's will, and actually fulfill God's will, and not let God's word be desecrated."  "For God's will gave men their form, their essence and their abilities.  Anyone who destroys His work is declaring war  on the Lord's creation, the divine will."

"Hence today I believe that I am acting in accordance with the will of the Almighty Creator:  by defending myself against the Jews, I am fighting for the work of the lord."

Ok, if you haven't figured it out already, these quotes are all from the pen of Adolf Hitler in his book, “Mein Kampf”.  I read this book recently and was shocked (not really) to see the thing is chock full of religious justification for the actions of Hitler and his Nazi party.  Undoubtedly, Hitler had many motivations for the terror he unleashed but there is no question that he used his Christian beliefs to help build his case.  When I discuss Hitler with religious people they are quick to point out that Hitler was not a “real” religious person, or that there is no evidence that he had a religious bone in his body.  I don’t know how you feel but those quotes look like the words of a religious man to me.  Who can really say if he was genuinely religious or not?  For that matter, who can really say what it even means to be truly religious   or motivated by your belief in a higher power?  Is George Bush any more or less religious than Osama Bin Laden or Bill Clinton?  Who really knows?  Did Hitler believe any more or any less than the Pope?
