How to Add a Fake Alarm  Light

Overview

I ride in to work a few days each week and park outside. My thought was to make somebody think twice about sitting on my bike by adding a fake alarm light. It's a small town but you never know what some moron will try.

The project was completed in less than an evening (I'm slow but do nice work).

Parts List

The few parts needed were available at Rat Shack.

5mm Blinking Red LED, #276-036
1k Ohm Resistor, #271-1321
Panel Mount LED Holder, #276-080
Hookup wire

Installation on a Hayabusa

There is no switch per se, as the blinking LED comes on when the key is off and the LED goes off when the key is on.

Solder the resistor to one side of the blinking LED. Solder the hookup wire to the resistor. The non-resistor side of the LED would have hookup wire only.

Put heat shrink tubing on exposed wire parts. I then taped the heat shrinked leads together with electrical tape for extra strength.

I bought some spade type fuse taps (cheap) at an auto parts store. Solder one fuse tap to each hookup wire. I put my light on the left side so it would be viewable with the bars turned and locked. The fuse block is also over there.

Find a fuse side that is off when ignition is off and on when ignition is on. Find a fuse side that is on all the time. Attach one lead to each and test.

You will have to modify the fuse block cover some how to get it to close all the way.

What worked for me was to use the short side of the LED lead, with the resistor, attached to the switched fuse.
