Australia & New Zealand 1999 trip

Come for the con, stay for the country.  That could have been an underlying motto for our month-long visit to Australia and New Zealand.  For the past 3 years we had been planning a trip to Australia to see Aussiecon 3.  As the trip approached, we decided to spend a month, and include New Zealand in our journeys.  Of course we didn't have enough time to see everything we wanted to (a month in just one country wouldn't have been enough anyway).  But we saw enough to want to go back!  Here are some highlights:

While in Australia we visited:
bulletMelbourne and its surrounds (including Wilsons Promontory and the Healesville Sanctuary)
bulletSydney
bulletPort Douglas (and nearby Mossman, Daintree, Cape Tribulation, and Cairns)

While in New Zealand we visited:
bulletRotorua (known among other things for nearby thermal regions.)
bulletNelson (providing easy access to the Abel Tasman region.)
bulletThe Southland (easy striking distance to Te Anau, Milford, and the Catlins.)
bulletAuckland (gateway to the United States if you're flying.)
